About Professor Doreen Cantrell
Professor Doreen Cantrell CBE, FRS, FRSE, FMedSci
Professor Doreen Cantrell is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee. Her research interests are focused on T lymphocyte development and activation, a key process to the comprehension and manipulation of mammalian immune responses. She has published over 180 research papers and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and EMBO in 2000, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2005 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2011. She was awarded Commander of the British Empire in the 2014 New Year Honours for her services to the UK Science. She has sat on numerous scientific committees and editorial boards and is currently a Member of the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellowship Committee, a Member of the Babraham Institute Board and Trustee of The Francis Crick Institute.
About Professor Birgitte Lane
Professor Birgitte Lane FRSE, FMedSci
Professor Birgitte Lane is Executive Director of A*STAR’s Institute of Medical Biology, and Chief Scientist of the Skin Research Institute of Singapore. She came to Singapore in 2005 from the University of Dundee, where she held the Cox Chair of Anatomy & Cell Biology. She obtained her BSc and PhD degrees in Zoology at University College London, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Imperial College (London) and Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories at Lincoln’s Inn Fields (now Cancer Research UK). She held a staff position at ICRF in London and later at the Clare Hall Laboratories before moving to Dundee in 1990. Her research career has focused on epithelial biology, especially genetic skin diseases, the keratin cytoskeleton, skin cancer and wound healing, and she has over 250 publications.
Professor Birgitte Lane is distinguished for her contributions to the understanding of the epithelial cell cytoskeleton in tissue structure and pathology. She led discoveries of the links between mutations in keratin genes and human skin diseases, including the basis of more than 15 distinct inherited genetic skin diseases. Her research team to becoming a central reference point in the keratinopathy field and a leading laboratory for generating and supplying monoclonal antibodies to keratins and epithelial cell lines to the broader community. Her team has made many important contributions to understanding the central role of filament protein networks in the function of epithelial sheet tissues of the body, and her recent studies on the cellular effects of keratin mutations are generating novel approaches to therapy for these rare and incurable conditions.
She played a key part in the early stages of setting up the Wellcome Trust Biocentre at the University of Dundee where she led the formation of the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology in the 1990s. She successfully trained and mentored internationally prominent scientists including Professor Xin Lu, FMedSci (Ludwig Institute Director, Oxford) and Professor Irwin McLean FRS, FMedSci (Dundee). Birgit Lane has contributed to the UK scientific community through her involvement in significant committees (Research Assessment Exercise, Wellcome Trust, Lister Institute, Cancer Research UK). Since 2005, she has been helping to build the Biomedical Sciences Initiative in Singapore. She led the Centre for Molecular Medicine into the formation of A*STAR’s Institute of Medical Biology in 2007. She then helped set up the Skin Research Institute of Singapore and served as its founding Executive Director (Scientific) from 2013-2017, and is now its Chief Scientist. Her success in institute building is characterized by achievements of radical reshaping and restructuring of a young scientific community to meet government objectives whilst maintaining growth in volume, morale and scientific reputation.
